Cleanathon
Cleanathon
The need
Mumbai, a bustling metropolis, faces significant environmental challenges, including pollution and littering in its public spaces.
The solution
The initiative’s primary goal is to restore the natural beauty of Mumbai’s beaches, forts, and public areas, while also raising awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
How RFI helps
Cleanathon initiative, now recognized as the largest student-led clean-up drive in Mumbai. This impactful program unites students from various schools and colleges to clean up beaches, forts, and other public places. Armed with gloves, trash bags, and cleaning tools, these dedicated young volunteers gather at various locations to remove litter, debris, and pollutants, making a tangible difference in their communities, fostering a strong sense of environmental responsibility and community involvement among the city’s youth.
Beyond Beaches: Cleaning Forts and Public Places
While beach clean-ups remain a central focus, the Cleanathon initiative has expanded its efforts to include the cleaning of forts and other public places. Mumbai’s historic forts, often neglected and littered with waste, are now receiving much-needed attention. By cleaning these sites, the initiative not only helps preserve the city’s heritage but also creates cleaner, safer spaces for residents and tourists to enjoy.
Post-Ganpati Visarjan Clean-Ups
A significant aspect of the Cleanathon initiative is its targeted clean-up drives following the Ganpati Visarjan festivities. This cultural and religious event, involving the immersion of Ganesh idols, often leaves beaches and water bodies polluted with waste. The Cleanathon drives, held immediately after Visarjan, address this critical need, ensuring that the environmental impact is mitigated promptly and effectively.
Educating and Empowering the Youth
The Cleanathon initiative goes beyond mere clean-up efforts by incorporating an educational component aimed at empowering students. Workshops and seminars are organized to educate participants about the environmental impact of pollution, the importance of waste management, and sustainable living practices. These educational activities inspire students to become lifelong environmental advocates and adopt greener habits in their daily lives.
Strong Community and Corporate Support
The success of the Cleanathon initiative is bolstered by robust community and corporate support. Local businesses, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and community groups collaborate with Rajani Foundation India, providing essential resources, logistical support, and additional volunteers. Corporate sponsors, recognizing the importance of environmental sustainability, also contribute to the initiative, enhancing its reach and impact.
